Arm Lengthening
For arm length discrepancy or cosmetic arm lengthening, the humerus is lengthened.
In conventional lengthening, a mono-fixator (external fixator) is used. During the lengthening period, patients can use their arms for regular daily activities. The disadvantage of using an external fixator are external fixation scars and discomfort. However, 8-10cm of lengthening is possible.
With the development of internal nails, internal arm lengthening is now available.
It has multiple advantages, such as less scarring and less pain. We no longer have to worry about pin-site infection.
However, rotator cuff injury or iatrogenic fracture may occur when the internal nail is inserted into the humerus. It is best to have an experienced and professional doctor perform the surgery. Currently we use the PRECICE nail for arm lengthening.
