The most conventional lengthening technique is the external-fixator-only (Ilizarov) method.
The lengthening procedure is mainly divided into two parts: a lengthening phase and a consolidation phase. The LON (Lengthening over Nail) and LATN (Lengthening and then Nailing) techniques were developed to shorten the external fixation period, but still in many cases the Ilizarov method is very useful. Recently, leg alignment correction with the Ilizarov method has become possible using a computer correctional system (Stewart Platform). With this technique, multi-plane deformity can be corrected in a single operation.
Donghoon Advanced Limb Lengthening Reconstruction Institute treats complex deformity using a computer correctional system (Ortho SUV®) and has used it in the largest volume of cases in Korea.
