We turn our patients’ dreams into reality by improving not only the length and shape, but also the function of their arms and legs.

Malunion (bone healing with improper alignment)
Sometimes the leg’s shape is changed after lengthening. Lengthening is a procedure of lengthening the bone, but strong resistance comes from the muscles as they are lengthened along with the bone. Because of this resistance, the bone may align improperly, resulting in deformity. (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11999-016-4712-8)
This phenomenon can be utilized to correct deformities that patients have prior to surgery. However, if the surgeon is not cautious, it can result in further deformity, particularly, leading to knock-knees in tibia lengthening. This is a very difficult aspect of lengthening. Donghoon Advanced Limb Lengthening Reconstruction Institute is an expert in leg alignment change during lengthening. We know how to prevent it and how to treat it, if further deformity occurs.

Revision Surgery after Deformity Correction
Deformity afterLeg Correction
Precise correction is essential in leg correction surgery.
From an orthopaedic point of view, it is not a medical problem if a surgeon made the leg angle within ‘normal range’. However, leg shape is not all about a standardized angle. One may be dissatisfied with the results, even if the leg angle is within ‘normal range’. Therefore, cosmetic leg correction surgery is a process of making the ‘best’ and most ‘beautiful’ legs within ‘normal range’. Of course, the best angle exists in leg correction for arthritis.
When legs are overly corrected, we call it an “over-correction”.
If a surgeon overly corrects bowlegs, it leads to knock-knees and vice versa. Under-correction leaves the same deformity after surgery. In leg correction surgery for arthritis, sometimes we intentionally over-correct it.
In any case, it is important to gain precise leg alignment 3-dimensionally and avoid over-correction simply to make the knees stick together. Sometimes, if a surgeon performs an operation without a thorough understanding of rotational deformity, it may lead to over-correction.
