We turn our patients’ dreams into reality by improving not only the length and shape, but also the function of their arms and legs.
Nerve Damage
Dong Hoon Lee
MajorNerve Injury
There are two main causes of nerve injury in limb lengthening and deformity correction.
One of them is paralysis during surgery. In this case, sensory or motor function of limbs may disappear right after the surgery. The other cause is paralysis during lengthening or correction after surgery. As nerve length and surrounding tissues change, nerves are stretched and pressured. In addition to this, ischemic nerve damage can occur due to complications like compartment syndrome.
In any operation, cutaneous nerves can be damaged with skin incision and partial sensory loss from micro-nerve stretching can occur. However, major nerves supporting main functions of the body should be protected.
Careful observation is essential during surgery and preventative soft tissue release around the nerve can be performed, if needed. Careful observation of changes in main nerve function following surgery and appropriate action are essential. If not, one may be left with permanent palsy.
