Complications and Revision Surgery

Limb Lengthening and Deformity correction surgery has high complication rates if a physician does not have enough experience.
In such complex surgeries, the prevention of complications is very important. If complications eventually occur, then the ability to solve problems correctly is important, making sure the patient does not end up with permanent complications.
In 1990, Dr. Paley suggested a classification method for problems, obstacles and complications of limb lengthening by the Ilizarov technique. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2403498)
In particular, bone defects, nonunion, major nerve palsy, deformity and joint contracture leave severe sequelae.
Lately, new forms of complications occur as intramedullary lengthening nails have developed, such as PRECICE nail.
Dr. Donghoon Lee suggests a new classification system for the device-related complications of intramedullary lengthening nails, and various solutions. (https://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2017/8032510/).
In deformity correction, while two cases of deformity might appear similar, their underlying causes may be completely different.
If a physician is unable to accurately analyze the deformity, or has limited surgical techniques, it may lead to another deformity. While in such cases patients may be unaware, since their legs might appear normal on the outside, in the long term, improper treatment may lead to arthritis.
Discuss with a professional who thoroughly understands all forms of deformity, and is able to perform appropriate surgical techniques.
